Guitar meme

My Favourite Guitar Things.......

Guitarist

Doc Watson, he does it all on a wooden box Mr Gallagher made for him

Album

John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton, i.e. the Beano album. Great tone, phrasing and the joy of playing throughout.

Track

Yakety Axe, Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler from 'Neck and Neck'. It's just pure fun with two guitars

Solo

Jesse Ed Davis on 'Six Days on the Road' from Taj Mahal 'Giant Step' album.

Lick

Travelling Riverside Blues, Robert Johnson. I've just learnt it and it's a buzz to play, really gets you motivatin'

Guitar & Why

Martin D28, an open G chord rings out with more bottom end than Willie Dixon

Amp

Fender twin reverb

Gig

Blues Cowboys album launch of 'At Last..." at The Kurrajong, Erskineville, 1999. Raw country blues in its natural environment, an old style pub. Johnny, Flash and Grunter just going off with Ed and Demo laying down that essence of runaway train groove. I've seen Led Zep, the Stones, Clapton, hundreds of big name, big dollar gigs, but nothing beats the atmosphere in a pub.

Pass it on to: Brian, John, Denzo, anyone who can be bothered

michael

very tasty taste you have my man. but i would put in the guitar solo from the original comets' rock around the clock - like the solo on stairway to heaven we have heard it soooo many times it blows past like the wind - but stop and listen and it is awesome in its technique, yet doesn't stop the excitement of the song - in fact it stokes it till it pops (how may more metaphores can i mix in here?)

Thanx for your comments, yep the rock around the clock solo sure snaps, crackles and pops! No technical genius, just pure excitement.

the only add i have is, of course, the solo from little wing by jimi hendrix on hendrix in the west.

i thought it was pretty good until i saw jimi plays berkley and found out that he played it with his teeth!!! the notes are so crisp and clear - like ringin' a bell.

I tried to look up my splendor in the guitar book at a second hand shop in lismore and it didn't exist. probably 'cos the book was american. it devoted a whole paragraph to Maton. some other irrelevant american dipshit axes rated almost a page.

so Brian, for real crispness of note, the plectrum of choice would be 'tooth enamel'? Well yank my molar and call me Albert King..BB King? BB Buell. oh take this damn D28 and pass me the Canora.

hmm....

a few things to look into, thanks guys.

i got a dvd with otis at monterey on it today. the dvd player, which worked on sunday, has failed. tommorow a new dvd player (damn there goes another $50)

on further examination they arn't in the correct order so we will see how good it is. maybe $10 wasted

i also got 10 episodes of dragnet and 15 of dick tracey 4 dick tracey movies and ten classic movies including the fast and the furious, the day of the triffids and to kill a mocking bird, none of which i have ever seen. another $25 possibly wasted

not bitter at all about the maton then brian?

still thinking about which things might be my favorites

sorry to post ot willie

yeah toss the picks and chomp on a tasty metal string or two.....i don't know how the man did it but it sure sounds ok.
the sanity store in grafton are giving away dvd players with a purchase of a movie or two so maybe leg it there "mr hacker" you may even be able to pick up the streets of san francisco too

Well there's a gap in the market,"the Tooth Pick". I've seen stone picks, gold plated picks, why not tooth picks

morning all,

brian, please just call me random, mr hacker was my father.

am off to find a new dvd player this morning.

still thinging about favorites. may have to agree with willie about the blues cowboys gig. favorite guitar would be the tele, but the favorite of the moment is the vantage steel string acoustic (i don't have favorites that i havent played). i would follow willie with the martin but i'm scared to hit it as hard as i like to hit them these days (and it's in open tuning).

all,

heard a just released jeff healey band live cd from montroux (?) 1989, yesterday. good solid blues, a move away form that technical display style he got into for a while. the opening track, an interesting arrangment of while my guitar gently weeps, is a ripper.

Brian, no sign of the splendor on the Maton site or google?

all,

the otis reading dvd is a winner.

all of monterey.

a lovely version of try a little tenderness from the english part of his european tour.

a version of green onions from booker t and the mgs.

some great stuff from sam and dave. i always thought sam and dave packaged soul songs into 3 minute pop. this live stuff of theirs is fantastic, great showmen/clowns.

i havent found any references to my splendor anywhere. tried the webwombat and altvista. If there is anything around i dunno.......I guess I have an unique piece of guitar. I have ahd a clean up - the connections etc and am waiting for a moment when I am able to make noise........

Brian, I can't wait to hear the splendiferous splendor. Might have to try and get up your way some time next month

I am intending to take a couple of weeks off in July 11th to 22nd so I will be home most of the time.
will be good to see you if you can manage to get away from the big smoke for a couple of days

Favourite mode to lick with?

Mine's locrian, that's a dark fucker if ever I played one..

thanks mp,locrian sounds worth a go. I've mainly had a trial and error, the notes are all there lets see if I can get them in the right order approach. Some science might be useful.
